On the next page, the Finals are being held March 18, 1966. At 1:30 Class C District Champs play - Sacred Heart, Newton vs St Pat's, Watertown.
It also lists St Patrick's of Watertown as one of the divisional champion schools receiving a Cardinal Cushing trophy from Monsignor Carroll.
There is an interesting note from the Tournament Committee to their spectators at the bottom of the 2nd page: "May we remind you that you are witnessing a 'Girls' Basketball Tournament', and, because they are girls, the rules of their game and their emotional and physical approach to competitive sports differs greatly from that of boys. Recognition and applause for exceptional play is to be encouraged, but again we remind you that these girls are all CYO Champions, and therefore should not be the target for derisive comment or unsportsmanlike behavior on the part of any spectator. Rather, let us strive to maintain the traditional high standards of fair play and good sportsmanship which have always been the hallmark of Catholic Youth Organization Athletics. Tournament Committee."
The roster of St Pat's players included: Jane Cadigan, Joan Cadigan (twins,) Kathy Doherty, Mary Kelleher, Arlene O'Donnell (sophomore,) Mary Clifford, Martha McCann (she took Irish dancing with us,) Marcia Durkin (sophomore,) Debbie McGillvoray, and Debbie Donell. Crummy morning! Mum & Dad are feuding. Took Jody (today's her birthday) for a walk. Came back cleaned up room. Went to Ma's for rolls. Went to Navin's. Went to basketball game at 2:30. Our team (east) won. We went to 5&10 with Patty & Joannie. Went to Joannie's. Mary, Patty & I went to Navin's. Broke kitchen light with basketball. Went Irish dancing at 8:30. Joanie wasn't ready as usual. Got to K of C at 8:45. Got home 10:40. Bye."

Dear Mary Ellen,
It seems such a long time since I last wrote to you so don't be surprised if this letter turns out to be unreadable (if there's such a word) and a mess. How is everyone? Well I hope.
First of all I'd better thank you for that very lovely purse mirror. It's the first one I've seen like it and I really adore it.
Sorry to hear you didn't get your snow at Christmas time but I'm sure you must have had it by now. I suppose Christmas is long in the past but I'll tell you how I spent mine. On Christmas Eve a couple of friends, Joan, Lily, & myself went to midnight mass and on the way home we sang Christmas carols then had lemonade & cake at my place when we got home. About 3 am we all went to bed. I got up at six the next morning (everyone else was in bed) and opened my presents. Mum & Dad gave me a hair dryer; Joe gave me a set of 18 glasses & $4.00; Joan gave me a manicure ...
"set, a bottle of bath salts & 2 bars of soap; Lizzy gave me 4 pillow slips; my soldier friend in Vietnam sent me a Parker pen & pencil set, also 3 cushions. Other presents I got from friends were table clothes, bath towels, pillow slips and piles of cards. After I opened my presents I went and got dressed and went to work. I had a really gorgeous Christmas at work and all I did was messed around and cheered up the patients. Nobody took much notice of what we did so I didn't miss out on anything that when on at home.
About the only Christmas traditions I can think of are going to Midnight Mass; decorating our houses both inside & out; decorating our tree. Quite a few people have green 'fir' trees growing in their garden as they usually decorate one outside. Some people do have green ones inside but mostly dry trees or the tinsel trees are used. We usually decorate our trees about a week before Christmas. Oh yes, another tradition is the popular Christmas ...
"dinner, which usually consists of goose, vegetables & other trimmings, plum pudding & Christmas cake. Also beer & wine and for the younger generation lemonade, etc. Yes, I made a few New Year Resolutions & I'm really going to try and see them out during the year. They include being nicer to people, be careful of the food I eat (in other words DIET), manage my money more carefully, not get serious with any boys just have fun & then drop them and try to write to you more often?????(I've made a bad start with that one). I've a few more written down but the're not important.
Some people have imitation mistletoe hung over their doorways, because mistletoe doesn't grow in Australia as far as I know. Over the festive season Ken came around quite a bit and if anything was hung anywhere (mistletoe or not) he was determined to kiss me. And he did.
Ken still comes around but not very ...
"often because I said I only want to be friends with him. I've got another flame now and his name is Ian McGowan, he comes from Barham. Mum & Dad don't like him and a couple of weeks ago he came to pick me up for the dance but Mum wouldn't let me go. Anyway Ian was determined that he would talk Mum into letting me go but finally she told him to get out. I've sneaked out about four times to go out with Ian but next time he phones I'm going to tell him I don't want to see him again. It's too complicated sneaking out. I think I just might ask Greg Peace around one of these days as I haven't been out with him for ages. 'Boys' what a problem they can be.
Now for other news if I can think of any. Well I went to the Cohuna Show last Friday Night & Saturday afternoon. All I did was go on the Ferris wheel, Flying Horses, Flying seats & into the Boxing (?) Really had a fab time especially Saturday when I was with Ian ...
"Some time ago we had our YCW meeting and I was elected president. I think it's really fab as I can travel & meet other Presidents and lots of other people. At the moment we are holding a raffle and later on were hoping to do such things as holding makeup demostrations, first aide courses, dinner dances, weekend trips (especially to the snow) sports afternoons & social evenings. I'm really having a ball being President and it's really nice having a say in things & having authority to do things.
I've just about written five pages of nothing so I think I'd better close now as I've still got a letter to write to Bruno. I received a note from him yesterday & he was wondering why I hadn't written yet, so I suppose I'd better get it done. Until next time

Went to 8 o'clock Mass - had to stand. Went with Mary to Margie Navin's (Mary's cousin.) The 3 of us & Louise (Margie's friend) went & bought a pizza - it was crummy. Saw some of the Easter parade. Margie was chasing boys. Stayed for dinner at Margie's. Sat with Dave & Chick. Mary was stuck with or rather squashed between Kenny, Margie, & Brian. Stayed till about 6:40. Charlie drove us home. Bonanza was great. Mike Burns was in it - he's terrific. So long."

Was going to 5:30 Mass when Joanie called at 5:15 and asked me to help her serve dinner to Boy Scouts' Parents. So I did. Went to 11:45 Mass. Mary came down after UNCLE book 4 that I bought & read last night. Joanie came up this after & we went for a ride with Mum & Dad & kids (Mary had left.) Went to Howard Johnson's & had an ice cream cone. I walked Joanie home. It was
freezing. Stopped at drugstore for a coke. Jack, John Short & Bob (new guy) were working & we were talking to them. Went to Huliston's. Mum called at 7:30 but no one told me & I didn't answer. She told me to go to the play at 7:40 when I called her back. Norman took me home & I changed. He drove me down. Met Mary, Lizzie, Moe, Birdie, & Liz Powell at hall. Play started at 8:15. It was great. Billy Enros was great as was Buddy Fanning. Norman drove me home."

Barbara Callan had her hair cut - short. Did Homework. Did exercises. Haven't written to Mary (Jelonek) yet. Bye"
My cousin Chris Navin is in the picture on the bottom right with Michael Ryan - they are commentators at a retreat Mass on April 4, 5, and 6.
I got mentioned for having made Second Honors in the top left.
There is also an article/editorial from Leo Buddy Fanning summing up what many 18 year old boys must have been feeling. The war is also now drawing closer to me - it is affecting people I know.
"How Old Is Eighteen?
It's going to be my eighteenth birthday soon, and within the weekspan of that jubilant day, I must report to my draft board. In this time period, the registrar of motor vehicles of my state considers me satisfactorily 'mature' to have a senior operating license. At eighteen, I may end my schooling and enter into marriage; either way I will be projected into a world that is like a mink in a hen house. On the other side, I may approach the standards of college and thus be deferred. But what if I flunk? Right! I get drafted. After a couple of months of basic training, I will be specialized and stationed in some Communist ransacked country. Here I must fight and probably die for the United States I love, but in which I have no vocal powers for I am just eighteen. This editorial is not to mock our routine but to imply a flaw."
The article on the lower right is about the CYO final in Roxbury on March 18 - I had included the program back at that time.
"SPH Girls Lose In CYO Final
Cheering, stamping, and stirring applause echoed and re-echoed itself in the Maurice Tobin Gym in Roxbury, Friday, March 18, as the loyal students of St Patrick High School of Watertown and Sacred Heart High of Newton welcomed their teams on the floor for the last game of the school year - the CYO Championship Tourney. This was the most tension-filled game for the archrivals since each had a season standing of 9-1, losing one to each other.
Good fortune favored St Pat's in the first period. Jane Cardigan sunk two lay-ups while team mates sunk one each. Sacred Heart girls scored five with one field goal and three free shots. Though leading by only three points at the end of the quarter SPH felt confident as they entered the second.
Kathy Delaney of SHH began the scoring on the second quarter with two points, followed by Valerie Long, also of the Red and White, before Kathy Doherty took up the fight for St Pat's.
Next to score for the Green and Gold was right guard Mary Clifford when she was fouled by Barbara Saleeby of Sacred Heart. Remaining points gained by Watertown in the first half were made by Jane Caddigan and Kathy Doherty with four each. Barbara Saleeby and Valerie Long dominated for Newton.
The fourth quarter was doom for St Patrick's. Struggling hard, they could not overcome the opposition. Sacred Heart sunk for thirteen points and ended the game triumphantly for the third consecutive year, the final score 33-26."
In Jeri's Journal at the end of her column, she mentions the World Affairs Club - "some of the topics discussed were the 'Ku Klux Klan' by Mary Power, Kathy Brown, Mary Manning, Janice Giallongo and Diane McCarthy ... At previous meetings 'The Decisions of 1966' were discussed. The subtopics of the decisions were: 'Vietnam" reported by Mary Manning, Sandra Mosca, Carol Paletti; 'NATO,' 'The Conflict between Arab and Israeli' and 'Nigeria.'

What a retreat! Fr. McAlister came to talk to my class today. We were saying anything - - he asked me if I could talk. Anyhow, Jay asked Fr's opinion on the 'Off with the top' movement for women, girls who use silicon to enlarge their chest, etc. All they talked about was sex. Mary P was disgusted. She doesn't like the priest - but I think he's great - so there! Took care of kids all day 'cept to go to Mass again with Joanie. Saw Bob Sanchez, the pregnant woman whom we thought had the baby last Sat & her husband. (Dad won $500 in St Pat's Athletic Ass drawing.)"

Easter was April 10 - Patty, me, Mum and Dad with Christine and Jody in front. We are standing in front of Mary Courtney's garage and house but you can see over to Saltonstall Park across Main Street. My mother made that pink jumper for me - I wore it in the State Rep campaign ad also.

Went back to school. Went to Hully's after to see end of Red Sox 1st game - after 13 innings they lost! 5-4. Went to 5 & 10 with Joanie but fountain was closed. Watched 'Confirm or Deny' with Don Ameche & Roddy McDowell. Did homework till 9. Watched F Troop & Peyton Place. Got something to eat & came up. Nite.

I apologize for not writing during the crossing which was not bad - I left Mauritius 6 March at 9 pm and I arrived at Reunion Island the morning of the 7th. I feel a little uneasy/sick. We did 4 days on Reunion Island. We spent a day in Tamatouse ( the capitol of Madagascar). I spent a day in Mombasa which I am sure is the most developed port and city. I visited a museum in Mombasa which is called Fort Jesus. I arrived in Marseille the 1st of April and spent the day visiting the city. I passed thru Paris and I hope to visit it on my way to Lourdes.
I met an American on board the boat. If you write to me again on the address on the air mail letter. I'm expecting a letter from you very soon and now I'll leave you.

My father reports that his newly started business began on April 1, 1966 and is not one that is succeeding a business in which he or his partners had a financial interest. He describes this as a retail business for the sales & services of aluminum windows, doors and accessories. Business code number 5211. My father signed the back as the owner on April 25, 1966.

Not much doing. Mary Power invited herself onto Decorating committee. Seems to be running it. No one seems to mind. Decorations are coming out great. Had fight with Mum about TV. Wanted to watch Laredo. Johnny, who hadn't finished homework, watched Celtics game. After a while, I cooled down, & Patty & I watched the Cs. They won championship for 8th straight time."

Nothing new. Went to Lizzie's house. Stupid me wore a dress. Did it to please Mum. Had a good time. Marie, Maureen (her birthday), Birdie, Pat, Diane Patrick & Mary Craig were there. Mary Craig's a great dancer. I nearly dislocated my left knee doing 'the 81.' Got home about 12. Saw Steve Perry. Did exercises. Went to bed about 2:30."

Thanks for your letter, I received it some days ago. I forgive you for not writing me for a long time, but I myself don't write so very often.
Yesterday I and some of my friend were at a pop gala with the TAGES and some not so popular Swedish pop groups. Have you ever heard anything about TAGES? Went to Northeastern U with Jay & Marie for a Journalism Conference. Was ok. Bob Kennedy of WBZ was there. Got a headache near end. Got worse on way home. Laid down from 6:30-7.Watched Gallant Men - very good. Went babysitting for Dickies at 8. Stayed till 2:20. Got $4. Did some exercises & washed TV there. Went to bed after doing more exercises. Patty babysat for Eileen."
